Darts terms you need to know
Like all the best sport, darts has its own language – let's break down some of the jargon to make sure you've got all the knowledge you need to make informed betting choices on the darts.
- Oche – the line which the player must stand behind when throwing their darts
- 180 – the maximum score with three darts (three treble-20s)
- Checkout – the total score needed to finish a leg. Players must always finish by hitting a double or bullseye with their last dart (for example, if a player needs 60 to checkout, they'll aim to hit single 20 followed by double-20).
- Bullseye – the very centre of the board, which scores 50 points. The outer ring of the bullseye is worth 25. A player can checkout on a bullseye, but not the outer bull.
- Shanghai– hitting a single, double and treble of the same number
- 9-dart finish – the perfect leg of darts, typically 180, 180, followed by treble-20, treble-19, and double-12.
- Big fish – the nickname for the highest possible checkout, 170 (treble-20, treble-20, bullseye)
