Bet on the chaotic thrills of Australian Rules football – better known as Aussie Rules – with William Hill. The Australian Football League (AFL) is where the biggest clubs and the best players ply their trade in this physical and fast-moving sport, with 18 teams drawn from across the nation.
Played on an oval-shaped field, 18 players per team try to kick the ball through the goal posts at either end with whichever team is leading after the end of the fourth quarter declared the winner. Aussie Rules has plenty of physical contact, with tackles made using hands or a player's whole body. It's no surprise that Aussie Rules is the most-watched sport in all of Australia, even surpassing the country's other great love, cricket.
You can bet on every game from the AFL at William Hill, with match betting on every fixture on the calendar along with special Aussie Rules betting markets for top-scorer, outright winner and more. The AFL has a long history dating all the way back to an inaugural season in 1897 when it was originally known as the Victorian Football League.
The modern-day AFL features a 24-round regular season with the top-eight teams entering the play-offs for the right to contest the AFL Grand Final at the famous Melbourne Cricket Ground. The winners of the Grand Final are known as "premiers", with Geelong the current reigning premiers after their 2022 victory.
The AFL takes place during the Australian winter. In 2023 the season began on 16th March and will wrap up on 27th August, with the play-offs begin shortly after. The 2023 AFL Grand Final is scheduled for Saturday, 30th September 2023 at the MCG.
Bet on who'll be the AFL premier in 2023 , who'll make the play-offs, who'll get to the Grand Final and so much more with our Aussie Rules betting markets. Major teams like Sydney, Melbourne, Collingwood, Brisbane and Adelaide all feature in the most-competitive Aussie Rules competition on the planet.
The AFL may be top dog in Australia when it comes to Aussie Rules football, but the South Australian National Football League (SANFL) sits proudly in second place. The SANFL is the oldest surviving football league in the land, having been founded in April 1877. Today, 10 teams from the state of South Australia compete every year for the right to call themselves SANFL champions.
The SANFL is a single-division league that, like the AFL, takes place during the Australian winter. Most recently won by Norwood for their 31st premiership, the 2023 season runs from 31st March and ends with a Grand Final on 24th September.
You'll find all the latest betting odds on the SANFL here, along with markets for the top team in the regular seas on and the winner of the Grand Final.
As well as the AFL and SANFL, there's a number of other Aussie Rules competitions to capture your interest. You'll find the latest odds on the Western Australian Football League (WAFL), the Victoria Football league (VFL) as well as betting markets on the AFL Women – the premier Aussie Rules competition in the women's game.
Whether you're an Aussie Rules veteran or new to the sport, there are some betting tips you should bear in mind before placing your stake:
• Head-to-head records: with a relatively-small number of Aussie Rules teams, sides become very familiar with each other. That means it can be easy to spot the teams that have an edge – tactical or mental – over another. Head-to-head records from the recent past could give you plenty of insight.
• Team news: Aussie Rules is a physically-demanding sport and injuries are a part of the game. Make sure you're fully up to speed on all the latest team news before placing your bet – is your favourite side missing a key player?
• Conditions: Aussie Rules football is an outdoors game played in the Australian winter, so weather can play a major factor in how a game unfolds. Rainy and windy weather can make it harder to score, which in turn could narrow the gap between underdog and favourite to make for a more closely-fought match than you'd expect in fair weather.
As well as match betting – where you pick the winner out of a specific match – we also offer a wide range of other Aussie Rules odds and betting markets for you to choose from, including:
• Outright winner:pick your winner of this year's Grand Final across the AFL, SANFL and more
• Total points: Aussie Rules is a high-scoring sport, with a goal kicked between the posts worth six points alone. Bet on the total number of points scored in a game.
• Top-scorer: bet on which player will score the most points during a game or the season.
• Half-time betting: Aussie Rules is played over four 20-minute quarters, and you can bet on which side will be ahead at half-time
• Handicap betting: pick which side of the handicap a match will end on – for example, will Collingwood win by more than 6.5 points in their next AFL game?
