Every year in the NFL, 32 teams take to the field across America in the regular season with a view to booking their spot in the post-season playoffs – and ultimately, lifting the Vince Lombardi trophy at the end of it all. The Kansas City Chiefs are the reigning champions after their win over the Philadelphia Eagles at Super Bowl LVII, but the beauty of the NFL is that each new season brings fresh faces and new challengers to the table: no team has won back-to-back Super Bowls since the 2004 New England Patriots.
The new season of NFL starts on Thursday, 7th September 2023 when the champion Chiefs host the Detroit Lions at Arrowhead Stadium, with the first Sunday of games on 10th September. For the first time the Super Bowl will be held in Las Vegas, with the season's showpiece scheduled for Sunday, 11th February 2024.

NFL handicap betting
You can bet on the point spreads on individual NFL games throughout the season, also known as NFL handicap betting or betting lines. Handicap betting is a popular way to bet on American football, particularly when there is a strong favourite against an underdog.
How does NFL handicap betting work?
Unlike money line bets where you back a winner of a specific game, NFL handicap betting is when you pick which side of a given points margin a game will end on. It means you can win your bet even if a team loses, as long as they do so by a lower margin than the handicap given for that game.
For each NFL game you'll find a point-spread market based on who is the favourite: for example, the Kansas City Chiefs may be listed as three-and-a-half point favourites for their next game against the Buffalo Bills. The handicap for this game would be shown as Chiefs -3.5, Bills +3.5.
- The Chiefs are favourites as they are the minus handicap (-3.5)
- If you think the Chiefs will win by more than 3.5 points over the Bills, you would bet on the Chiefs -3.5
- If you want to go the other way, you will be betting on the Bills to win the game outright, or, at the very least, lose by less than 3.5 points
How is an NFL handicap bet settled?
In this example, let's say the Chiefs beat the Bills 30-28.
- If you bet on the Chiefs -3.5, then you deduct 3.5 points from their final score. In this case that would leave an adjusted score of Chiefs 26.5, Bills 28. Even though the Chiefs won the game, they won by less than the -3.5 margin of the handicap, so this would be a losing bet.
- If you bet on the Bills +3.5, then you add 3.5 points to their final score. That would leave an adjusted score of Chiefs 30, Bills 31.5. Even though the Bills lost the game, they did so by less than the +3.5 margin of the handicap, so this would be a winning bet. This is also known as “covering the spread” or simply “covering”.
Betting on Super Bowl LVIII in 2024
The next Super Bowl is the 58th in history, often styled as Super Bowl LVIII. It will take place at Las Vegas' Allegiant Stadium and be held on Sunday, 11th February 2024. Every year, the Super Bowl is contested by the top teams from the NFC and AFC, with the winners of each conference's championship game progressing through to the biggest stage in NFL. Last year's Super Bowl was held at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, and saw the Kansas City Chiefs beat the Philadelphia Eagles 38-35. It was the Chiefs' second title in the last four years, and their third in history. Chiefs' quarterback Patrick Mahomes was named Super Bowl MVP.

NFL division and conference winners
The NFL's 32 teams are divided into two conferences – the American Football Conference (AFC) and National Football Conference (NFC). Each conference contains 16 teams, split into four divisions of four teams each – the North, South, East and West.
Every season, teams play the other three teams in their division twice, home and away, with the rest of the 17-game schedule made up of other teams from around the NFL. The prize for winning a division is a guaranteed spot in the post-season playoffs, with wildcard spots available to other teams who finish with the best records.
At William Hill, you can bet on the winners of each of the NFL's divisions, and there's always plenty of surprises throughout the season as some teams rise and others fade away unexpectedly.
You can also bet on the winners of each conference, the AFC and NFC. This is determined through the playoffs, where teams face off in single-game elimination until two teams are left in each conference. Those teams play in the AFC and NFC Championship games, with the winner of each heading to the Super Bowl for the ultimate prize in the sport.
Betting on London NFL games and the international series
The 2023 NFL season features five international games, with three taking place in London and two in Germany.The Jacksonville Jaguars will play the Atlanta Falcons at Wembley Stadium on 1st October, before the Jags face the Buffalo Bills at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium the following week (8th October). This will be the first time that an NFL team has played two regular season games outside the US.
The final London game of the season is on 15th October, with the Tennessee Titans playing the Baltimore Ravens at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. November sees two games at Frankfurt Stadium in Germany, with the Miami Dolphins facing the Kansas City Chiefs on 5th November and the Indianapolis Colts taking on the New England Patriots on 12th November.

Betting on MVP and player awards
Every year the NFL crowns its MVP: the Most Valuable Player as voted for by his peers. You can bet on the recipient of this prestigious award every season, along with other player awards such as the Rookies of the Year and the Defensive and Offensive Players of the Year.
The reigning MVP is Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs, who won the award for the second time in 2022. The New York Jets' pair of Garrett Wilson and Sauce Gardner took the Offensive and Defensive Rookie of the Year honours, while Minnesota Vikings' wide-receiver Justin Jefferson was the Offensive Player of the Year. Defensive Player of the Year was awarded to Nick Bosa, the San Francisco 49ers defensive end.
Betting on the NFL draft
The superstars of the future are chosen every year in the NFL draft, as a whole new crop of young players are selected out of college football in a seven-round draft by all 32 teams. Typically, the team with the worst record from the previous season will make the first pick in the draft, giving struggling teams a chance to make a swift turnaround if they can unearth a generational talent.
The next NFL draft will take place between 25th and 27th April 2024, with the event held in Detroit. Alabama quarterback Bryce Young was the first player chosen in 2023, with the Carolina Panthers drafting him first overall.

- Check the form: how are a team playing? Are they on an unbeaten run, or have they been on a losing streak? Is their home stadium a fortress where they're a match for any opponent, or have they been pushovers in front of their own fans?
- Injuries:is the star quarterback injured? Is this the week the leading wide receiver returns to the line-up? Teams are required to disclose injury statuses of players every week, so keep a close eye on the injury report before picking your bets.
- Playing conditions:NFL is an outdoor sport, although some teams play in domes. For those without a roof, however, the weather can be a huge factor. Check the playing conditions before you bet: a downpour of rain could be a leveller between two otherwise-mismatched teams, while others might buckle if not used to the scorching heat of Miami or the high altitude of Denver's Mile High Stadium.
